The July 13th Reuters report told us that the Swiss right-to-die group Exit has negotiated an operating agreement with the prosecutors in the Canton of Zurich. The Telegraph now says that this is just the initial step in a plan — by several Swiss MPs from different parties — to hobble the other right-to-die group, Dignitas, this autumn:
the Exit agreement will become mandatory legislation for all groups operating in the Canton of Zurich. The restrictive rules would probably force Dignitas out of Zurich, but it could still operate in Switzerland.
the new Zurich legislation will then be used as model
national legislation applicable in all of Switzerland.
Dignitas would then not be able to operate, in it's
current fashion, in Switzerland.
The report says that the agreement restricts the way
assisted suicides are carried out, who can be helped to
take their own life and how much they can be charged.
Swiss national Justice Minister Eveline Wildmer Schlumpf
said: "Two variations of the legislation are going to be
considered in autumn, one is a complete ban on assisted
suicide and one is the introduction of stricter, clearer
legislation".
