Dr. Jack Kevorkian gave an "impassioned" speech to a
sold-out crowd at Kutztown University on Sunday. His
topic was "Civil Rights, Civil Disobedience and Criminal
Justice". He urged attendees to speak up and unite on
issues involving human rights, civil justice and
euthanasia.
"About euthanasia, Kevorkian was literal, providing the
audience with screen-projected images of assessment and
evaluation sheets of patients. He took the crowd through
the step-by-step process used to assess the patient's
eligibility for euthanasia. Kevorkian calls the right to
die a "medical decision between doctor and patient," and
argues the procedure is done only when there is the
prognosis is terminal. He said euthanasia is a means to
alleviate extreme suffering and is done so only with the
patient's consent and after extensive consultation with a
series of doctors and psychiatrists."

An account of the Kutztown visit by Richard N.
Cote. A notable observation: "Kevorkian is a
strong supporter of civil disobedience in the face
of human rights violations. But he also strongly
believes that doctors should manage and supervise
all cases of voluntary deathing. This runs
contrary to the beliefs of a large portion of the
right-to-die community, who believe in personal
autonomy, and that only the patient and no one
else should make all choices about how his or her
life should end."
Dr. Jack Kevorkian urges civil disobedience in speech at Kutztown University
[Reading Eagle, Pennsylvania]

"Dr. Jack Kevorkian, the man dubbed "Dr. Death"
who sparked a national debate on right-to-die
issues in the 1990s, urged Kutztown University
students Sunday to take up the cause of civil
disobedience. Arguing for individual rights,
legalized euthanasia and prison reform, the
81-year-old Kevorkian appeared frail and seemed to
have difficulty hearing."
