A terminally-ill 79-year-old man has been arrested on
suspicion of murder, after his wife's body was
discovered in their home. Their daughters said, in a
public statement, that their mother had died suddenly
and "Her husband, William Iredale Stanton, is severely
disabled and the strain of caring for him had become
excessive," they said. "They had enjoyed 52 years of
very happy marriage together and did not want to live
separate, lonely existences, as their parents did, so
decided to commit suicide together. Both are
atheists. Unfortunately the attempt was only partly
successful and her husband lives on, cared for by his
daughters."
In an additional report, The Telegraph says: "Dr
Stanton is the leading expert geologist on the Mendip
Hills, its caves and underground water systems. He has
spent his life studying the landscape and has also been
a trustee of the Somerset Wildlife Trust. A keen caver,
he was the first to explore the county's subterranean
chambers."

Two weeks after an apparent murder-suicide
attempt, neighbors of James and Phyllis Fish say
the topic is close at hand. Teryl Zarnow
interviews several neighbours, ending with Helen
Tan, 89, who says: "When you love someone and
watch them suffer with pain, and you see no way
out, then he thinks he is doing the kindest thing.
I think to myself, suppose I was in that kind of a
situation: What would I do? I don't know."
