Tasmania: Committee says Dying with Dignity Bill "flawed"

Description:

The Joint Standing Committee on Community Development of the Parliament of Tasmania has finished reviewing Nick McKim's Dying with Dignity Bill 2009, and rejected it, using the mildest of terms: "That the Dying with Dignity Bill 2009, the subject of this inquiry in its current form does not provide an adequate or concise legislative framework to permit voluntary euthanasia/physician assisted suicide."

McKim, the Greens' leader, hopes to have the bill debated in the House of Assembly before the end of the year: "Mr McKim says the committee was split and he will press on. "I don't regard the committee's report as particularly helpful," he said."

Tasmanian Deputy Premier Lara Giddings served notice that she intends to move that the Greens' Dying with Dignity Bill 2009 be sent to a parliamentary committee for study and public submissions. The Greens oppose the move, arguing that it would impose unnecessary delay.
