1950: To Kill or Not to Kill: Two experts debate the morality of euthanasia.

Description:

On January 28, 1950, The Nation published an article "Euthanasia — Pro and Con". The Pro side was represented by "A Human Necessity" by Harry Benjamin. The Con side was represented by "A False Mercy" by Martin Gumpert.

Other than the easy mention of the Nazis, the arguments are remarkably similar to today — including the contention that "The weapons of medicine for fighting pain and alleviating unbearable suffering have increased beyond any expectation. There is, indeed, no place for unbearable pain in modern medicine. If people die in torment it is because qualified medical or nursing care is unavailable."
