Every five years, many nations report to the UN Human
Rights Committee (HRC), focusing on Human Rights issues
in general and the "right to life" in particular. Last
July, in considering the report of the Netherlands, the
HRC urged the Dutch to change their euthanasia
legislation to provide for judicial review before
euthanasia took place.
Now the Dutch minister of Justice Ernst Hirsch Ballin
has informed Parliament that the government continues to
believe the HRC suggestion is not warranted, and that
the existing requirement to have a second independent
doctor's opinion is a sufficient prior safeguard.
[Editor: Note that each and every Dutch euthanasia case
is reviewed afterwards by a regional euthanasia review
committee. Any non-reported cases would render the
doctor liable to criminal proceedings.]
