Sir Ludovic Kennedy, writer, broadcaster and campaigner,
died at the age of 89 years on October 18th. A
co-founder of the Voluntary Euthanasia Society (now
Dignity in Dying) and author of Euthanasia: The Case
for the Good Death, his investigative writing helped
end capital punishment in Britain. A lifelong atheist,
he published All In The Mind: A Farewell To God (1999),
and was a supporter of the British Humanist
Association.
He resigned from the Liberal Democratic party in 2001,
and "stood as an independent on a platform of legalising
voluntary euthanasia in the 2001 general election for
the Wiltshire constituency of Devizes." The Daily Mail
piece (below) ends with: "Despite the sometimes fierce
battles (in war and peace) in which he was engaged, Ludo
had no enemies. And you couldn't wish for a better
epitaph than that."

"My friend Ludo": A tribute to broadcasting titan
Ludovic Kennedy, 89, whose tireless crusading killed

"He went on causing controversy well into his 80s,
having been knighted in 1994. For example, after
watching his mother's slow decline and death he
became a leading campaigner for legalised
euthanasia. He helped found the Voluntary
Euthanasia Society and published All In The Mind:
Farewell To God, in which he characterised God as
a creation of human beings rather than the
reverse."

"Knighted in 1994, Sir Ludovic Kennedy also had
other strong convictions. He wanted independence
for Scotland, he was president of the Voluntary
Euthanasia Society and, at 80, he brought out a
book dismissing the beliefs on which Christianity
was founded as "preposterous"."
