A private member's bill allowing voluntary euthanasia is
due for a free vote in the South Australian upper house.
The bill, introduced by Greens MP Mark Parnell, creates
a Voluntary Euthanasia Board of SA to consider any
voluntary euthanasia before it takes place. Supporters
are confident of winning the vote. A separate bill is
before the lower house, introduced by independent MP Bob
Such. [For details of the bills, see below.]
The South Australian Voluntary
Euthanasia Society (SAVES) plans a rally on the
Parliament House steps, including speakers Dr Paul
Collier of Dignity for Disabled and Dr Di Wickett of the
Australian Nurses Federation. SAVES president Frances
Coombe said: "A huge majority of South Australians are
clear that, if they are suffering intolerably from
unrelievable symptoms, a doctor should be allowed to
accede to their request for a lethal dose to end their
lives."

"Former Northern Territory Chief Minister Marshall
Perron is in Adelaide and two Bills for legalising
euthanasia are before Parliament - introduced by
Greens MLC Mark Parnell and Independent MP Bob
Such. They hope they will be debated this week.
Mr Perron, however, says "fanatical" religious
"zealots" are standing in the way of what should
be a human right. "We need our parliaments to
listen to what people are saying."
