The Quebec College of Physicians (CMQ) has released a
report calling for an informed debate on euthanasia.
The report says the "question of euthanasia must be
integrated as a part of appropriate end-of-life care as
soon as possible", because "there are certain
exceptional situations — uncontrollable pain or
interminable suffering, for example — in which
euthanasia could be considered to be a final step
required to assure the provision of quality care."
However, the CMQ does not support Bill C-384, because,
in part, "the draft legislation has the foreseeable
consequence of confining doctors to the role of mere
technicians." The CMQ insists that "appropriate care"
such as euthanasia can only be decided by a consensual
process in which doctors have a vote. It is not a matter
to be decided by the patient alone.
