After four hours of debate, the Dying with Dignity
private members bill put forward by the Greens leader,
Nick McKim, has been defeated in the Parliament of
Tasmania. Although it was a free vote, members voted
along party lines, with all Greens voting for it and all
Liberals voted against it. The final tally was 15 to 7.
McKim says that if he is re-elected in March next year,
he will be introducing a bill again. "I'm absolutely
convinced that law reform in this area is the right
thing to do."

Vow to push on with death bill
[ABC News, AU]

"The Tasmanian MP who introduced the defeated
voluntary euthanasia bill has vowed to continue
the fight. The Greens leader Nick McKim's "Dying
with Dignity" bill was defeated in a late session
of Parliament last night. 15 members opposed the
bill, seven supported it, and two were absent. Mr
McKim says if he's re-elected in March next year,
euthanasia legislation will be brought before
parliament again. "I will put this bill up, or a
similar bill, again and again and again if I'm
re-elected because I'm absolutely convinced that
law reform in this area is the right thing to do,"
he said."

Voluntary euthanasia bill to be debated this Wednesday
[The Greens, Tasmania]

"Tasmanian Greens Leader Nick McKim MP today
confirmed that the Dying With Dignity Bill 2009
will be debated by the House of Assembly this
Wednesday, with over four hours set aside to
provide all MPs to have a chance to put their
views on the record."
A Toronto Globe and mail report offers a hint of
how Quebec might proceed without Federal
agreement: "Quebec could create a framework for
ethical euthanasia for terminally ill patients,
said Yvon Bureau, a social worker and long-time
activist for legalization. As with abortion
several decades ago, the Quebec government could
declare an end to prosecutions for euthanasia, as
long as the rules are followed. "I think it's
something that might be too big for Canada to take
on, but just small enough in Quebec," Mr. Bureau
said."
