This report interviews two British Columbians: Dr Scott
Wallace, a former right-to-die activist, and Russel
Ogden, a sociologist whose research focuses on
euthanasia. 74% of British Columbians support
legalizing euthanasia according to a September Angus
Reid poll. This is the second highest approval level
after Quebec. Ogden says support for euthanasia is
generally rising over time, and is higher when the
question is more specific.
Yet it is widely expected that Bill C-384, An Act to
amend the Criminal Code (right to die with dignity) will
not be enacted by Parliament. "It's political suicide,"
Ogden speculated. "For a politician, it's an excellent
way to alienate large proportions of their voters."
