Yesterday, in the French National Assembly's debate of
the voluntary euthanasia bill, the health minister
invoked a procedural move which prevented detailed
consideration of the bill's provisions. In response,
the socialist deputies walked out of the chamber in
protest. The bill is based on legislation in Belgium
and the Netherlands.
The bill will be back for a vote in the Assembly on
Tuesday.

The ADMD blog press release says the French
government has used a procedural device to deny
full debate of the voluntary euthanasia bill.
According to Jean-Luc Romero, president of ADMD,
the government's attitude is: "Suffer, die in
silence!"

USA: Christian leaders issue "Manhattan Declaration: A Call of Christian Conscience"
[New York Times]
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/20/us/politics/20alliance.html
"Citing the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s call
to civil disobedience, 145 evangelical, Roman
Catholic and Orthodox Christian leaders have
signed a declaration saying they will not
cooperate with laws that they say could be used to
compel their institutions to participate in
abortions, or to bless or in any way recognize
same-sex couples." "The document says, 'We will
not comply with any edict that purports to compel
our institutions to participate in abortions,
embryo-destructive research, assisted suicide and
euthanasia, or any other antilife act; nor will we
bend to any rule purporting to force us to bless
immoral sexual partnerships, treat them as
marriages or the equivalent.'"

[communitycare.co.uk]
http://www.communitycare.co.uk/Articles/2009/11/20/113212/dpp-assisted-suicide-policy-no-threat-to-disabled-people.htm
"Director of public prosecutions Keir Starmer has
defended his interim policy on prosecutions for
assisted suicide against charges it would put
vulnerable people, including the disabled, at
risk. Speaking to Community Care, Starmer said
the policy, which set out a series of factors that
would make a prosecution more or less likely,
needed to be read as a whole, rather than by
isolating particular factors for criticism."

"The Saskatchewan farmer who killed his severely
disabled daughter has lost his bid for an extended
leave from his halfway house. The appeal division

to live on his own during the work week and only
stay at a halfway house on weekends."
Canada: MP, 414 residents oppose assisted suicide bill
[Elliot Lake Standard]
http://www.elliotlakestandard.ca/ArticleDisplay.aspx?e=2182031
"A bill to allow physician-assisted suicide will
not get support from 414 Elliot Lakers as well as
Carol Hughes, MP for
Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing. A petition
opposing private member's Bill C-384 was handed to
Hughes at her Elliot Lake office by Kathleen
Rosilius and Mary Gour. The two women say it was
signed by many in the city's Christian community."

[christianity.ca]

[The Press and Journal]
http://www.pressandjournal.co.uk/Article.aspx/1482984?UserKey=

take place in Aberdeen on Monday. The public

for the Friends at the End society, will argue in
favour of the motion. Putting the case against

Canada: Hospice offers alternative
[Red Deer Advocate]
http://www.albertalocalnews.com/reddeeradvocate/news/local/Hospice_offers_alternative_70186017.html
"Cheri Purpur, nurse manager with Red Deer Hospice
Society, said if people understood what type of
care people receive in a hospice, they likely
wouldn't look at euthanasia. 'It would seem the
whole issue of euthanasia and assisted suicide is
mis-focused. Not enough people know what kind of
pain and symptom management is available to make
those last weeks and days comfortable and less
stressful,' Purpur said. People assume the pain
management available will not be enough, she said.
'It really isn't the case. There is always
something.' The Canadian Society of Palliative
Care Physicians, the Alzheimer Society of Canada
and the Canadian Hospice Palliative Care
Association all want to refocus the debate on the
right to have high quality care for all Canadians
at the end of life"
