Halifax: Euthanasia opponent to speak about right-to-die bill C-384

Description:

St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Halifax will host a lecture by Alex Schadenberg, head of the Euthanasia Prevention Coalition, on a private member's bill to legalize assisted suicide in Canada. Schadenberg says: "The issue is not about ending medical treatment, it's not about overdoses of morphine that are done accidentally and it's not about sedation. It's about directly and intentionally causing someone's death."

Ruth von Fuchs, president of the Right to Die Society said: "This issue needs to be brought forward as often as possible until people finally face reality and think about it and address it. At the present time, people are abandoning (patients) at what you could say was their hour of greatest need," she said. It's when a person is dying or suffering from a serious illness that they most need the love and support of their community, she said. "The opposition says that love and support means forcing them to stay alive whether they want to or not," Ms. von Fuchs said. "That's not real love and support. That's not real friendship."

Canada might be a popular destination for "death tourism" if a private member's bill that would legalize euthanasia and assisted suicide is approved by the House of Commons, a public meeting in Halifax heard Saturday. Foreigners seeking either life-ending method could come to this country with supportive relatives or friends because the proposed legislation, Bill C-384, doesn't have a residency requirement, said Alex Schadenberg. An anti-euthanasia crusader, Mr. Schadenberg is the executive director of the Euthanasia Prevention Coalition headquartered in London, Ont.
