The government of Quebec agreed to create an ad-hoc
roaming commission to hear public submissions on the
right to die. Pauline Marois, leader of the Parti
Quebecois, held a news conference this morning to
announce she was seeking the agreement of the National
Assembly. Now that the Liberals have agreed, a vote is
a formality.
Geoff Kelley, the Liberal chairman of the legislature's
health and social service committee, which is organizing
the project, said: "This is not a partisan
debate. There is not a Liberal position, or a PQ
position or an ADQ (Action democratique du Quebec)
position or a Quebec solidaire position. It's just
something that I think 125 members of this assembly have
a responsibility to look at and have a responsibility to
untangle these very complex moral, legal and medical
issues."
"I believe that more then ever the Quebec
population is ready to hold this debate," Pauline Marois
said. "Quebecers are people who understand inconsiderate
suffering and they want to find solutions."
