Sheila Ruffell writes to the Times Colonist:
As members of a caring society, we need to
accept the need for euthanasia. I have had three
relatives die after long, painful illnesses in the
last few years.
My brother-in-law died of Parkinson's at 59. Just
before he lost the ability to speak entirely, he
said "everything is a pain or a hassle." However,
he had to live on for several years after that,
totally unable to do anything for himself….
If we treated our aging animals like this, the
SPCA would be after us. Surely we can build
enough safeguards into the system to prevent abuse
and allow suffering souls like these to end their
lives in peace?
