Britain: Shropshire woman wants husband out of his misery

Description:

DEVOTED Valerie Brooks spoke of the pain of caring for a husband with Alzheimer's and said: "Euthanasia never crossed my mind before — but I'd consider it now." Retired civil engineer Terry, 64, is in the latter stages of the crippling degenerative brain disease after first showing symptoms five years ago. He is now in a residential care home and his slow decay has had a devastating effect on Valerie and their two sons —  leading her to a change of heart on assisted suicides. The pensioner, of Newport, Shropshire, said: "Terry is just existing now, there's no quality of life for him. The sooner he's out of his misery, the better."

"I can't get my husband out of the [residential care] home, let alone on a plane. But if I could, I would consider taking him to Switzerland. For anyone who thinks it's wrong, I would take them to see Terry and ask them what they think afterwards. It sounds horrible, but if he was a dog he would have been put down weeks ago. I wouldn't do anything illegal, but if there was something that I could do now, then I would."
