Former Michigan state senator Fred Dillingham
sponsored legislation during the 1990s that helped
ban assisted suicide, and is seen in news footage
in the film alongside then-Gov. John Engler as
Engler signed one of the bills into law. The law
was in response to Dr. Jack Kevorkian's
activities.
Dillingham is still a foe of assisted suicide.
The report says:
He credits Kevorkian, however, with shining a new
light on hospice care, which allows terminally ill
patients to receive holistic, rather than advanced
medical, care as they end their lives.
Dillingham said legislation compelling insurance
companies to cover hospice care and better defining
state law regarding durable powers of attorney and
living wills followed.
He called Kevorkian a "catalyst" that emphasized the
need for hospice care, and that Michigan's hospice
legislation became a national model.
"It probably would not have evolved as quickly.
There's no doubt that Kevorkian stirred the pot to a
point where it became a major public policy issue
that commanded a great deal of legislative focus and
attention," said Dillingham, adding that both of his
parents died under hospice care.
