Tasmania: Coast MPs may swing right to die vote

Description: [of the article from The Advocate]

This report from the Australian state of Tasmania begins with: Braddon's two new MHAs could help swing the voluntary euthanasia vote at the political level, supporting it in principle. Deputy Premier Lara Giddings recently announced she would revisit voluntary euthanasia laws, introducing a private member's bill probably late next year, following Greens leader Nick McKim's failed Dying with Dignity bid last year.

Ms Giddings is hoping some of the 11 new House of Assembly MPs will support her push, with Braddon's Adam Brooks (Liberal) and Paul O'Halloran (Greens) supporting in-principle voluntary euthanasia.

Later in the report: Mr Brooks said his final vote would very much depend on the detail of the bill, adding he did not support the model put forward by Mr McKim. "Fundamentally I support freedom of choice," Mr Brooks said. "The problem I have with this is we need to make sure this legislation is right. "We need to make sure giving people that freedom does not impact on people. "I had some grave concerns over Mr McKim's model and if I was there (in parliament at the time) I probably wouldn't have supported that model."

The bill would need to pass through both houses of parliament to become law.

Dr. Philip Nitschke has received permission from the Australian Senate to insert a response into the written Senate record, after asserting that Senator Steven Conroy deliberately misled the Senate about Exit International's involvement in 14 reported suicides. Conroy omitted to tell the Senate that the people who had used Nembutal to commit suicide had "knowledge of the drug and/or access to it from their work experience or workplace", not from The Peaceful Pill Handbook.

The report starts with: Following an offensive and misleading attack on Exit international by Communications Minister Senator Conroy given at a Senate estimates hearing on 24 May, Dr Philip Nitschke was awarded a Right of Reply to correct the inaccuracy of the Minister's comments. Of particular concern to Exit was Senator Conroy's suggestion that data from the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine implicated Exit and The Peaceful Pill eHandbook in the suicides of 14 people under 40, and that this constituted grounds for the government to include Exit International websites in the proposed ISP filter blacklist.

At the heart of Exit's complaint was Senator Conroy's decision not to highlight the clarification published in The Age newspaper by the Director of the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine, Professor Joan Ozanne-Smith. In a letter to the Editor, Professor Joan Ozanne-Smith wrote that most of those under 40 dying of pentobarbitone toxicity had "'knowledge of the drug and/or access to it from their work experience or workplace."'

This deliberate omission by Senator Conroy was done to bolster the Federal Government's argument that mandatory internet censorship is needed. In doing so, the comments were also intended to deliberately damage the reputation of Exit international and its Director Dr Philip Nitschke.
